Do You Really Need Your Brain?

Sunday, July 23rd, 2006

from our fellow rogue scientists @ alternativescience.com:

Is your brain really necessary? The reason for my apparently absurd question is the remarkable research conducted at the University of Sheffield by neurology professor the late Dr. John Lorber.

[[ … ]]

Instead of two hemispheres filling the cranial cavity, some 4.5 centimetres deep, the student had less than 1 millimetre of cerebral tissue covering the top of his spinal column. The student was suffering from hydrocephalus, the condition in which the cerebrospinal fluid, instead of circulating around the brain and entering the bloodstream, becomes dammed up inside.

[[ … ]]

One of the few biologists to propose a radically novel approach to these questions is Dr. Rupert Sheldrake. In his book A New Science of Life Sheldrake rejected the idea that the brain is a warehouse for memories and suggested it is more like a radio receiver for tuning into the past. Memory is not a recording process in which a medium is altered to store records, but a journey that the mind makes into the past via the process of morphic resonance. Such a "radio" receiver would require far fewer and less complex structures than a warehouse capable of storing and retrieving a lifetime of data.

But, of course, such a crazy idea couldn't possibly be true, could it?

Subject: It's possible because I always use Extrra-Time!

Hello to you! A high percentage of males suffer from this, and you shouldn't be one of them. Your problems will be fixed with Extra-Time, a complex method of dealing with all the reasons. Lack control over your squirting? Partner unhappy with the time you last in bed? Confidence and affection of your partner are the greatest things you get.

Punctuation: apostrophes and quotation marks

Wednesday, July 12th, 2006

Akira says… we've been doing it wrong. The prime symbol (') shouldn't be used to create the possessive nor should the double prime (") be used for quotes.

While this is useful information to know and we freely admit our error, we're still committed to the prime and double-prime, because we think the apostrophe and double quotes look stupid.

" Double prime: " or "
' Prime: '
´ Acute Accent: ´ or ´
Left Double Quote: “ or “
Right Double Quote: ” or ”
Low Double Quote: „ or „
Left Single Quote: ‘ or ‘
Right Single Quote: ’ or ’
» Right Double Guillemets: » or »
« Left Double Guillements: « or «
Right Single Guillement: ›
Left Single Guillement: ‹

ABC No Rio

ABC No Rio buys its building!

The New York Times, July 4, 2006
For $1, a Collective Mixing Art and Radical Politics Turns Itself Into Its Own Landlord
By Colin Moynihan

For decades the stretch of Rivington Street running east from Essex Street was a largely forgotten and gritty pocket of the Lower East Side, home to bodegas, nail salons and blue-collar residents. Over the last 10 years, though, the area has evolved into one of Manhattan's trendy neighborhoods, with new restaurants, bars and boutiques. Roaming heroin dealers have given way to throngs of young, noisy visitors.

Standing on the north side of Rivington, between Suffolk and Clinton Streets, is one of the few buildings that have barely changed in two decades: a crumbling, four-story structure that at one time was inhabited by squatters and now houses ABC No Rio, a community and cultural center that seeks to explore the interaction of art and radical politics. The building has a prominent place in the lore of the Lower East Side, and at times has had a rocky relationship with City Hall.

[[ … ]]

Last week, the city sold the building, 156 Rivington Street, to ABC No Rio for $1, said Neill Coleman, a spokesman for the Department of Housing Preservation and Development. The transaction came after years of negotiations, and one of the conditions was that the nonprofit collective that runs the building had to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to begin renovations. Mr. Coleman said the city sometimes sells buildings for a dollar to community or cultural organizations because such groups provide a benefit to the public.

gah!?!—Is Visual Studio 2003 incapable of generating XHTML?

Thursday, May 25th, 2006

Microsoft's Visual Studio 2003 generates the worst HTML I've ever seen (ok, not as bad as Microsoft Office Word’s, but close) and it will not permit me to generate XHTML. Even after tweaking all of the available Tools | Options for HTML, it still strips quotes and changes the case. This is not an isolated problem, for other users' rants, see the comments on this ToDotNet post

According to Rick Strahl (Code Development Magazine), Visual Studio 2005 addresses this problem: "Most importantly, the new editor doesn't wreck your code formatting unless you reformat the document."

SQL does not stand for "structured query language"…

Nor is it pronounced "sequel". SQL is just "ess-que-elle". ANSI says so.
