According to Google [official], they use a Mercator projection for their maps [both street and satellite]. Charlie Savage provides quite a bit more detail, though [unofficial]:
Datum—WGS84 [he' assuming this, he's never seen verification of it]
Projection—Mercator
Unit system—pixels [believe it or not]
Axes—standard east, non-standard south
Origin—Near the north pole on the international date line

while the xmaps library certainly promises a more robust solution than our preferred answer to dealing with polygons, we haven't been able to get it to work with version two of the api.
